Why should Councils support Turntables
The R-Codes and Local Town Planning Schemes and Polices require some properties to have the ability for vehicles to manoeuvre on site so that they enter the road in a forward manner. While local councils can enforce this when a property is developed, there is no mechanism to enforce residents to actually perform the manoeuvre on site; residents can simply reverse out of the driveway onto the road.
Why is this a issue?
Tragically one child, often a toddler, is run over in the driveway every week in Australia. The vehicle is often being driven by a parent, relative or friend. The vehicle is usually only moving slowly, however, a slow-moving vehicle reversing down a driveway can trap a child, causing fatal crush injuries. Children who survive are often left with severe long-term injuries(1).
Secondly, rrivers reversing onto roads can cause interruptions in traffic flow and are a danger to pedestrians and cyclists.
To rectify this, we want to make it easier for drivers to do the right thing. Car turntables allow turning on the spot. No more tight manoeuvres and reversing out of rear properties. Councils can be assured that the intended design of the property access leg will be followed. It is the easiest and most efficient option for councils and for residents.
